Omega-3 pills fail to work in Alzheimer's patients....STOP! HOLD THE PRESS!

CHICAGO (AP) - Omega-3 pills promoted as boosting memory didn't slow mental and physical decline in older patients with Alzheimer's disease, a big disappointment in a multimillion-dollar government-funded study.

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish or supplements have been shown to help protect against heart disease and are being studied for possible effects on a range of other illnesses including cancer and depression.

The new research involved nearly 300 men and women aged 76 on average with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. They were randomly assigned to take either DHA pills or dummy pills daily for 18 months.

"There is no basis for recommending DHA supplementation for patients with Alzheimer disease," the authors concluded.

....Except that; when I last heard, Omega-3 fatty acids were ESSENTIAL!  We need them and our bodies cannot manufacture these.  These sure won't damage the person afflicted with Alzheimer disease....but, More importantly, this study appears to be very flawed.

Should we do a study where we attempt to see if we can grow a limb back using a protein drink after it has been mostly bitten off by a shark?  Yes, I am being overly critical, but the effects of Alzheimer disease are devastating to the brain and to attempt to reverse this disease at the advanced stages used in this study; doomed before the start.

A study of this type should have been started 30 years ago and followed a pool of 300 young people who had a strong family history of Alzheimer disease...and followed these people until their seventies.

The FACT is; everyone should be taking Omega-3 fatty acids, starting when we are young.  It is good for the body and good for the brain.  Our GP should be "recommending"; NO, demanding their patients to be taking these daily.

Reviews By Our Satisfied Patients

  • "I have known Dr. Leigh from being one of his first 60+ patients. He has grown his business by leaps and bounds since then. My having moved away for 13 yrs., I am impressed with an occasional visit how incredibly knowledgeable Dr. Leigh is no matter what the medical issue is pertaining to the spine, cervical vertebrae, bones in other areas especially resulting from traumas to the body. I can pick Dr. Leigh's brain and he's always spot on with an answer. Kirstin is a wonderful asset with her proficiency in making appts., insurance info, etc. and pleasant manner with patients."
